چکیده

Theory presented by Ashby states that the process of homeostasis is directly related to intelligence and to the ability of an individual in successfully adapting to dynamic environments or disruptions. This paper presents an artificial homeostatic system entirely under evolutionary control, composed of an extended model of the GasNet artificial neural network framework, named NSGasNet, and an artificial endocrine system. Mimicking properties of the neuro-endocrine interaction, the system is shown to be able to precisely coordinate behaviour for an agent with internal dynamics, which should explore the scenario without endangering its essential organization. It is envisaged that the proposed framework is a step towards the design of a generic model for coordinating more complex behaviours and potentially coping with severe disruptions.

Potentials of Evolving Linear Models in Tracking Control Design for Nonlinear Variable Structure Systems

Evolving models have found applications in many real world systems. In this paper, potentials of the Evolving Linear Models (ELMs) in tracking control design for nonlinear variable structure systems are introduced. At first, an ELM is introduced as a dynamic single input, single output (SISO) linear model whose parameters as well as dynamic orders of input and output signals can change through ...

A Homeostatic-Adaptive Approach for Controlling Robotic Systems

Extended Abstract In this work, we present a hybrid mechanism for controlling a mobile robotic system which combines concepts from homeostatic control and adaptive behavior. The homeostatic control is inspired by an emotional approach consisting of a set of artificial hormones [2] computed from pre-categorical sensory data and also from high-level application results. The adaptive behavior is i...

Evolving Embodied Genetic Regulatory Network-Driven Control Systems

We demonstrate the evolution of simple embodied Genetic Regulatory Networks (GRNs) as real-time control systems for robotic and software-based embodied Artificial Organisms, and present results from two experimental test-beds: homeostatic temperature regulation in an abstract software environment, and phototactic robot behaviour maximising exposure to light. The GRN controllers are continually ...

Evolving Mixed Societies: A one-dimensional modelling approach

Natural self-organising collective systems like social insect societies are often used as a source of inspiration for robotic applications. In return, developing such self-organising robotic systems can lead to a better understanding of natural collective systems. By unifying the communication channels of the natural and artificial agents these two collective systems can be merged into one bio-...

Generation of Diversity in a Reaction-Diffusion-Based Controller

A controller of biological or artificial organism (e.g., in bio-inspired cellular robots) consists of a number of processes that drive its dynamics. For a system of processes to perform as a successful controller, different properties can be mentioned. One of the desirable properties of such a system is the capability of generating sufficiently diverse patterns of outputs and behaviors. A syste...
